They are, first of all, the spirits of young women or girls who ended their lives tragically, often because of unrequited love. They always remain between two worlds: <em>Nav<\/em> \u2013 the otherworld, and <em>Yav<\/em> \u2013 the world of humans. She is dressed in a long white shirt or dress and always walks barefoot. She has long hair, always decorated with a wreath of flowers, but the type of flowers depends on where the <em>mavka<\/em> comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Field <em>mavkas<\/em> have wildflowers in their hair.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forest <em>mavkas<\/em> wear wreaths made of branches of the tree they live on (willow, linden, maple).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mountain <em>mavkas<\/em> use flowers gathered from the mountains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first glance, she looks like an ordinary girl, but as soon as you see her back, everything becomes clear: instead of a back, <em>mavkas<\/em> have a dead womb, where a heart that does not beat, blackened lungs, and other organs are visible.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-right-float\">\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origins of Mavkas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Mavkas<\/em> may appear in different ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Girls who ended their own lives because of unhappy love and refused to go to the world of the dead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Girls who voluntarily agreed to transformation after meeting a spirit, enchanted by their persuasion and magical suggestion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Girls who chose to become <em>mavkas<\/em>, often those considered not beautiful, old maids, not very intelligent, or with bodily or health defects, believing they would become eternally young and beautiful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children who died before christening, or very early, and whose souls did not enter the world of the dead within seven years \u2013 they were taken by the <em>mavkas<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-left-grid\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mavka-heart.jpg\" alt=\"A jeweled knife piercing through a heart.\" class=\"wp-image-195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mavka-heart.jpg 800w, https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mavka-heart-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mavka-heart-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"post-left-text\">\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behaviour and Protection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of their longing for love, <em>mavkas<\/em> can lure and seduce men, drawing them into the forest. Men could only protect themselves by giving a comb; other methods, such as wormwood or lovage, did not help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Girls, however, could protect themselves: carrying wormwood, <a href=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/index.php\/glossary\/#lovage\" class=\"glossary-link\"><em>lovage<\/em><\/a>, or garlic made the <em>mavkas<\/em> avoid them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People treated <em>mavkas<\/em> with caution, though they were guardians of the forest, waters, fields, and nature. To prevent harm to crops or mischief, people tried to appease them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During <em>Nav Week<\/em>, special care was taken not to anger <em>mavkas<\/em>, as they awoke from winter sleep like <a href=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/index.php\/2025\/08\/08\/rusalka\/\">rusalkas<\/a> and needed peace for recovery. They could also live in the steppe, in large bushes, dark deep forests, high up in the mountains, or even in caves. That\u2019s why you can always spot them wearing wreaths \u2013 they love nature, are deeply connected to it, and are always gathering new flowers to decorate their beautiful long hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Mavkas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many subspecies of <em>mavkas<\/em>, and in the past, they were not united under one name. In Ukrainian legends, different names appear, often linked to plants, shrubs, trees, or natural phenomena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Forest Mavkas<\/em> \u2013 berezytsia, verbitsia, dubytsia, osynytsia, vyshnytsia, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Field Mavkas<\/em> \u2013 hrechyukha, ovsyanytsia, zhytnytsia, poludnytsia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Others<\/em> \u2013 kanuperytsia, grozovytsia, nichna-marukha, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mavkas might be the most well-known forest spirits in Ukrainian folklore literature.
