Their long hair sticks out in every direction. They wear white, semi-transparent dresses that hide their legs, making them seem like they fly instead of walk. Their arms are bony, with thin fingers and sharp, sometimes long nails, almost like claws. Beliefs and legends say their wide-open eyes hold horror, and their faces twist in pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Nichnytsias<\/em> show themselves only at night. They also transform into creatures like bats, slipping into homes more easily \u2014 often through windows.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-right-float\">\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Are They?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People said <em>nichnytsias<\/em> were girls who died unnatural deaths or the restless souls of witches. They disturb children\u2019s sleep by touching them and stealing their dreams. Some legends warn that if a <em>nichnytsia<\/em> feeds a child with her milk, the child may develop colic or stomach problems. <em>Nichnytsias<\/em> harm adults too. They spark quarrels in families and steal dreams from grown-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Fight Nichnytsia?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People in different regions of Ukraine used various methods to get rid of <em>nichnytsias<\/em>. They divided these methods into simpler, well-known ones and those reserved for the worst situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most famous method among ancestors involved placing a <a href=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/index.php\/glossary\/#motanka\" class=\"glossary-link\"><em>motanka doll<\/em><\/a> in the child\u2019s cradle to trick (lure) the <em>nichnytsia<\/em> onto it, allowing the child to sleep peacefully while the <em>nichnytsia<\/em> tormented the doll instead.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-left-grid\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nichnytsia-comb-2.jpg\" alt=\"A vintage ornamental hair comb.\" class=\"wp-image-184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nichnytsia-comb-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nichnytsia-comb-2-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/nichnytsia-comb-2-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"text-left-grid\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancestors considered another method effective in protecting against <em>nichnytsias<\/em>. The mother would sit on the threshold of the house and take the restless child in her right arm. She used her left hand to comb the child\u2019s hair \u2014 usually thirty times or in sets of seven. Then she placed the comb into a bowl on the floor and poured boiling water over it. At that moment, another woman \u2014 typically a grandmother or sister \u2014 would stand outside the door and ask, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d The mother would reply, \u201cSteaming away the <em>nichnytsia<\/em>!\u201d The woman outside would respond cheerfully, \u201cSteam, steam, let her eyes burn.\u201d They repeated this exchange three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another method involved fumigating the room with strawberry leaves. They burned the leaves and walked around the room with the smoke because <em>nichnytsias<\/em> dislike that smell. The easiest method involved putting various herbs under the pillow, such as thistle.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-main-grid\">\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/rusalka-chicken.jpg\" alt=\"A chicken.\" class=\"wp-image-182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/rusalka-chicken.jpg 800w, https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/rusalka-chicken-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/marevo.world\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/rusalka-chicken-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"text-main-grid\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People also used other ways to drive away troublesome <em>nichnytsias<\/em>. One method involved chickens. If a child slept poorly, the mother would take the child to the chicken coop and place them beneath the perch where the chickens slept. While doing this, she would say, \u201cWhite hens, speckled hens, yellow hens, cuckoo hens \u2014 take your <em>nichnytsias<\/em> and return health and sleep to my child.\u201d Then she would wash the child\u2019s face three times with water while saying, \u201cFrom the goose \u2014 the water, from the child \u2014 the trouble.\u201d After the ritual, the mother always dressed the child in clean clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People also asked trees (oak for boys, birch or willow for girls) to exchange the child\u2019s nighttime crying for peaceful sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-left-float\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Zhytomyr region, people practiced more complex methods. They dressed the child in the grandfather\u2019s coat and placed them on the doorstep. They stepped over the child several times while saying, \u201cI gave birth to you, and I will take you away.\u201d Some other rituals involved washing the child in herbal brew.
